چکیده

The scarcity of efficient and user-friendly authoring tools has long been acknowledged as a limiting factor in the widespread development and deployment of intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). Creating an effective authoring tool for domain experts poses two significant challenges: it must facilitate the creation of curricular content by domain experts who are typically neither ITS experts nor software engineers, and it must support the creation or modification of ITS-specific pedagogical strategies without exposing the complexity of the ITS itself to the domain expert. This paper presents a set of authoring tool design principles such as leveraging existing UI workflows, collaboration, and automation to improve the effectiveness of domain experts. Specifically, this paper examines the design of ITS authoring tools through the lens of software en-

Integrating Sensors in a Mobile Application Authoring Environment

Authoring tools have emerged as a valid alternative [Boujarwah 2011] to the stiffness of applications which fail to adapt to the constantly updated requirements of their stakeholders. This is particularly relevant in critical domains such as healthcare [Das 2002]. It can help domain specialists and IT experts in finding a commitment towards balancing the degree of intervention each of the invol...

Lessons Learned from Authoring for Inquiry Learning: A Tale of Authoring Tool Evolution

We present an argument for ongoing and deep participation by subject matter experts (SMEs, i.e. teachers and domain experts) in advanced learning environment (LE) development, and thus for the need for highly usable authoring tools. We also argue for the "user participatory design" of involving SMEs in creating the authoring tools themselves. We describe our experience building authoring tools ...

Towards an Accessible Interface for Story World Building

In order to use computational intelligence for automated narrative synthesis, domain knowledge of the story world must be defined, a task which is currently confined to experts. This paper discusses the benefits and tradeoffs between agent-centric and event-centric approaches towards authoring the domain knowledge of story worlds. In an effort to democratize story world creation, we present an ...

The Process of Policy Authoring of Patient-Controlled Privacy Preferences

Discussions about appropriate security controls to protect medical records led to the understanding that the patient her-/himself plays a crucial role in networked electronic health-care. Patients have individual privacy concerns and may want to execute their personal right of self-determination on access and usage of their medical records. The ability for patients to have control over their pe...

Involving Domain Experts in Authoring OWL Ontologies

The process of authoring ontologies requires the active involvement of domain experts who should lead the process, as well as providing the relevant conceptual knowledge. However, most domain experts lack knowledge modelling skills and find it hard to follow logical notations in OWL. This paper presents ROO, a tool that facilitates domain experts' definition of ontologies in OWL by allowing the...
